Beneficial Owners: Why Ownership Transparency Matters
|Virkly
Since 2017, all Danish companies have been required to register their beneficial owners in the CVR registry. Beneficial owners are the natural persons who ultimately own or control a company.
What is a Beneficial Owner?
A beneficial owner is a natural person who:
- Directly or indirectly owns more than 25% of the company
- Directly or indirectly controls more than 25% of the voting rights
- Otherwise exercises control over the company
Why Does It Matter?
The registration of beneficial owners serves several purposes:
- Anti-money laundering — it makes it harder to hide illegal money flows
- Transparency — the public can see who truly controls companies
- Due diligence — businesses can verify their partners
